The main objective of CEMBO is to promote building an excellent centre at the FNS CU, which will be focused on the study of various aspects of microbial biofilms and the strategies for their eradication. This will be possible to achieve by providing of technical knowledge and skills in the scientific topic of this project concerning on combating and evaluation of polymicrobial biofilms composed of clinically relevant microorganism.

The planned project activity should qualitatively transform the FNS CU team into the Centre of Excellence in science and research and change the position of this centre and the faculty itself to internationally respected institutions. The subject of the project and the topics of the research of the involved partners are very important aspects of the project. They relate to issues with immense impact in terms of social practice. Microbial biofilm represents one of the most important problems in clinical practice because of possible complications through biofilm-associated infections that complicate a treatment of patients. Therefore, the impact of biofilm study is not only from social point of view, but also economical as the treatment of those secondary infections significantly hampers the budgets of hospitals. In addition to the medical issue, there are also environmental aspects as microbial biofilms play important role in waste management and in environmental protection.

The solution of problems associate with biofilms requires a wide interdisciplinary approach. The CEMBO project plans are very ambitious in this respect and should lead not only to the development of the Center of excellence in the study of biofilms, but also to the expansion of the involvement of other Slovakian institutions, which requires close cooperation.
